Search “how to make money online in Tanzania” and you will find a lot of promises: get rich in a week, double your money, earn from your phone without any work. Most of them are not true. But real people in Tanzania do earn money online every day. They just do it with real products, real skills and real customers.
Here are six real ways to make money online in Tanzania, and three things to avoid.
1. Sell physical products online
You don’t need an expensive shop to sell. Many Tanzanians sell clothes, cosmetics, electronics, food and home goods using Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp, with delivery and M-Pesa payment. Start with a product you understand and a clear target customer. My ebook Uza Online Bila Duka shows how to start without a physical shop.
2. Offer a digital service to local businesses
Thousands of Tanzanian businesses want to sell online but don’t have the time or skills. You can help them with:
- Managing social media pages.
- Running sponsored ads.
- Graphic design and video editing.
- Writing captions and product descriptions.
Start with two or three clients, do great work, and ask for referrals.
3. Freelance for international clients
Platforms like Fiverr and Upwork connect freelancers with clients around the world. Skills such as writing, design, video editing, translation and virtual assistance are in demand. Before you start, check how each platform pays out and which withdrawal methods work for you in Tanzania.
4. Create content
If you can teach, entertain or inform, you can build an audience on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram or a podcast. Income can come from platform monetization, where you are eligible, from brand deals with local businesses, and from selling your own products to your audience. It takes time, so pick a topic you can talk about for years.
5. Sell what you know
Your knowledge is a product. You can sell ebooks, online courses, coaching or paid workshops. This is what I do: I teach business owners how to run sponsored ads through my ebooks, my online course and one-on-one sessions.
6. Resell or earn commission
If you don’t have your own product yet, you can partner with a supplier and earn a margin or commission for every customer you bring. It is a low-cost way to learn online selling before you invest in stock.
3 things to avoid
- “Guaranteed returns” schemes. If someone promises to double your money, or pays you mainly for recruiting other people, walk away.
- Paying to get a job. Real employers and clients don’t ask you to pay a “registration fee” before you start working.
- Get-rich-quick trading groups. Be very careful with groups that promise easy profits from trading. Never invest money you cannot afford to lose.
Make money online in Tanzania the right way
An online business is still a business. Keep records of your sales and expenses, and check the current registration and tax rules for online businesses with the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).
Pick one and start
