Your customers are on their phones every day. They scroll Instagram on the daladala, watch TikTok at lunch and check WhatsApp status before they sleep. If your business is not there, your competitors get those customers. This guide shows you how to advertise your business online in Tanzania, starting with free methods and then moving to paid ads that bring sales every day.
Before you advertise: get these 3 things ready
Advertising sends people to your business. If your page looks empty or nobody replies, you waste that attention. Prepare first:
- A clear offer. What do you sell, for whom, and at what price? “Quality shoes” is weak. “Leather school shoes, sizes 28 to 40, TZS 35,000, delivery in Dar” is strong.
- A page that builds trust. At least 9 good posts, a clear bio, your location and real customer reviews or photos.
- A fast way to buy. A WhatsApp Business number, a Lipa Namba and someone who replies quickly, even on weekends.
Free ways to advertise your business online in Tanzania
You can start today without paying anything. Free methods take more time, but they build the trust that makes paid ads work better later.
1. WhatsApp status and Business catalogue
WhatsApp is where most Tanzanian sales are closed. Post your products on your status every day, set up a catalogue with prices in WhatsApp Business, and use quick replies so customers get answers fast. Ask happy customers to share your status with friends.
2. Consistent Instagram and Facebook posts
Post at least 3 to 5 times a week. Mix product photos, short videos, prices, customer reviews and behind-the-scenes clips. Reels usually reach more new people than photos. Always add your WhatsApp number and location.
3. TikTok videos
TikTok can show your video to thousands of people even if you have few followers. Show your product in use, answer common questions, or film how you pack orders. Keep it real and short. You don’t need a professional camera.
4. Google Business Profile
When people search “salon near me” or “pharmacy Mwenge”, Google shows businesses on the map. Create a free Google Business Profile, add photos, opening hours and your phone number, and ask customers to leave reviews.
5. Groups, partners and referrals
Share helpful posts in Facebook groups where your customers are, without spamming. Partner with businesses that serve the same customers, and give a small reward to customers who bring friends.

Paid ads: the fastest way to reach new customers
Free methods reach the people who already know you. Sponsored ads let you reach new people who have never heard of you, and you choose exactly who sees your offer: their location, age and interests. This is how many small businesses grow from a few orders a week to orders every day.
Facebook and Instagram ads
Both platforms are run from one place: Meta’s Ads Manager. You can target people in a specific city, such as Dar es Salaam, Arusha or Mwanza, and send them straight to your WhatsApp. For most businesses in Tanzania, ads that open a WhatsApp chat work best, because customers like to ask questions before they pay.
A tip if you use an iPhone: boosting posts from the Instagram app on iPhone usually includes an extra Apple fee. My ebook on running sponsored ads on iPhone without the Apple fee shows how to avoid it. If you use Android, see the Android sponsored ads guide.
TikTok ads
TikTok ads work well for products people buy on impulse and for brands that target young customers. You can promote one of your own videos or create ads in TikTok Ads Manager. Videos that look like normal TikTok content usually perform better than polished adverts.
Google ads
Google ads show your business when people are already searching for what you sell, such as “car hire in Arusha” or “school uniforms Dar es Salaam”. They work best for services and for customers who are ready to buy now.
How much should you spend on online ads?
There is no single right amount, but here is the starting budget I recommend to the business owners I train:
- TikTok: about TZS 10,000 per day.
- Instagram (and Facebook): $5 to $30 per day, depending on your product and how many customers you can serve. Start near $5 if you are new, and move up as you see sales.
Keep that budget running for at least one or two weeks, so the platform has time to learn who responds. Then:
- Watch results, not likes. Count messages, orders and sales from each ad.
- Keep what works. Stop ads that bring no messages after a fair test.
- Increase slowly. When an ad brings sales, raise the budget step by step.
Ads are paid by card. Many Tanzanian business owners use a Visa or Mastercard debit card, or a virtual card from their bank or mobile money provider.
5 mistakes that waste your ad money
- Boosting random posts. Choose your best post with a clear offer and price.
- Targeting all of Tanzania when you can only deliver in one city.
- No price in the ad. People scroll past when they have to ask “bei gani?”.
- Slow replies. A customer who waits an hour often buys from someone else.
- Stopping too early. One day of ads is not a test. Give it time and measure.
Do it yourself or get help?
If you have time and want to learn, you can run your own ads. My Uza Deilee course teaches you step by step, in Swahili, how to run sponsored ads on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok and sell every day. If you prefer one-on-one guidance, book a training session.
If you don’t have time, my team can run your ads for you. See the Sponsored Ads Management service.
Start small, measure, then grow
The best way to advertise your business online in Tanzania is to combine both: free posts that build trust, and paid ads that bring new customers every day. Start with one platform where your customers spend the most time, measure your results, and grow from there.
