More Tanzanians are buying on Instagram, WhatsApp and TikTok every day. A shop no longer needs a building in Kariakoo; it needs a phone, good photos and a way to get paid. If you are looking for online businesses to start in Tanzania, this list gives you 15 ideas that work today, with what each one needs to start.
I have grouped them into three types: selling products, selling services and selling knowledge. Read them all, then pick one that matches your skills and your budget.
Online businesses that sell products
1. Online clothing and shoe shop
Clothes are among the easiest things to sell online because people love to see new styles. Start small with a few pieces, take clear photos in daylight, and post prices openly. Many sellers begin with mitumba sorted by size or with new stock bought in small quantities.
Start with: small stock, a smartphone, an Instagram page and WhatsApp Business.
2. Reselling for a commission
You don’t own any stock. You post a supplier’s products, add your margin, and only pay the supplier after your customer pays you. It is the best way to learn online selling with almost no risk. I explain how in how to earn money online in Tanzania without investment.
Start with: a trusted supplier and your WhatsApp status.
3. Beauty and cosmetics shop
Skin care, hair products, wigs and makeup sell well online, especially when you show before-and-after results. Buy only genuine products from reliable wholesalers, because one fake product can destroy your reputation.
Start with: small stock and short videos showing how products are used.
4. Phone accessories and electronics
Covers, chargers, earphones, power banks and smart watches are bought by almost everyone. Margins are small per item, so you win on volume and fast delivery.
Start with: small stock of fast-moving items and a delivery partner.
5. Home cooking and food orders
If people love your food, take orders on WhatsApp for lunch boxes, snacks, cakes or weekend meals. Post a menu every morning and deliver with a boda boda rider you trust. Make sure your kitchen is clean and you follow your local food safety rules.
Start with: your kitchen, a simple menu and a delivery rider.
Online businesses that sell services
6. Social media management
Many small businesses know they should post online but have no time. You can run their pages for a monthly fee: photos, captions, posting and replying to messages. Start with one client, deliver results, and use that client as proof.
Start with: a smartphone and good writing skills.
7. Sponsored ads management
Businesses that are ready to grow need people who can run Facebook, Instagram and TikTok ads that bring sales, not just likes. This pays more than posting alone, because your results are easy to measure. You can learn the skill in the Uza Deilee course, or see how I run ads for clients on my Sponsored Ads Management page.
Start with: ad skills and one business willing to test a small budget.
8. Graphic design
Flyers, logos, menus, wedding cards and social media posts are needed every day. Free tools like Canva let you start on your phone, and you can upgrade to professional tools later.
Start with: Canva and a portfolio of 10 sample designs.
9. Photography and video for businesses
Good photos sell products. Many shops, restaurants and hotels will pay for product photos, short reels and TikTok videos. A modern smartphone and a cheap ring light are enough to begin.
Start with: a smartphone with a good camera and a ring light.
10. Website design for small businesses
Schools, hotels, clinics and NGOs need simple websites. If you learn WordPress, you can build sites and also charge every year for hosting support and updates.
Start with: a laptop and WordPress skills.
11. Delivery and errand service for online shops
Every online seller needs reliable delivery. If you have a motorbike or work with riders, you can partner with several shops and deliver their orders for a fee per trip.
Start with: a motorbike or a team of trusted riders and a WhatsApp group for orders.
12. Event planning and decoration booked online
Weddings, send-offs, birthdays and graduation parties are big in Tanzania. Show your past decorations on Instagram and TikTok and take bookings online. Your photos are your best advert.
Start with: decoration materials and photos of your past work.
Online businesses that sell knowledge
13. Online tutoring and lessons
Parents pay for help with maths, English and science, especially before national exams. Adults also pay to learn skills like Excel, driving theory or cooking. Teach on video calls or in WhatsApp groups.
Start with: a subject you know well and a few free lessons to build trust.
14. Ebooks and digital products
Write once and sell many times. Ebooks, templates, price lists and short guides can be delivered on WhatsApp as PDFs right after payment. I sell ebooks this way myself, such as my guide to selling online without a shop (in Swahili).
Start with: knowledge people want and a free tool to make PDFs.
15. Content creation on TikTok and YouTube
Build an audience around one topic: comedy, food, farming, business tips or fashion. Once your followers trust you, brands will pay you to promote their products, and you can sell your own products too. It takes the longest to pay, but it can grow into your biggest asset.
Start with: a smartphone, one topic and a posting plan you can keep.
How to choose the right online business
Ask yourself three questions:
- What do I already know or do well? Start with your skill, not with what is trending.
- How much money can I risk? If the answer is none, choose a service or reselling. If you have some capital, add stock.
- Who will buy? Name your first ten customers. If you can’t, pick an idea closer to the people you know.
How to start in the next 7 days
- Choose one idea from this list. Only one.
- Open WhatsApp Business and an Instagram or TikTok page with your business name.
- Post 10 photos, samples or videos of what you sell.
- Tell everyone in your contacts and ask for your first order.
- When sales become regular, register your business name with BRELA and get your TIN from TRA so you can grow without problems.
